Welcome to NASO Community! Not many people outside South Asia may know that in Nepal nearly 20% of its population is discriminated based on caste. This situation has been in existence from many centuries. Previously, these discriminated people were known as backward or untouchable. Due to dominant society’s lack of interest and government’s inadequate initiatives, they have been living a segregated and poor life. Because of this situation, in order to find justice and respectable position in the society, from last couple years, these discriminated people have been identifying themselves as “Dalits” or oppressed people. (We have referred them here as “Oppressed People”).
Because of this situation one can perceive disparity and discord in Nepalese society, particularly in case of oppressed people. With a view to create awareness about Nepal’s Oppressed Peoples’ situation in North American; and motivate the Nepali society as a whole to change their thinking and attitude toward caste based discrimination through proactive initiatives, the Nepali America Society for Oppressed Community (NASO Community) was founded in 2004.
NASO Community is a non political, non profit and non sectarian membership based voluntary organization. It is incorporated in the State of Maryland, USA. It maintains tax exempt status of 503 (C) (3).
Our History A group of nine people gathered together in a small city of USA, called Baltimore. It was in 2004. The purpose of the gathering was to establish a fund by putting some of their pocket money to help some of the needy children who cannot go to school because they have to go to work for their living. They have no opportunities in life for education, job, and overall, there is nothing for them except working hard and earn a living on a day to day basis. They are poor and most of the time; they are the socially deprived community in various measures. In the social hierarchy, they are put in the lowest category and are always neglected and abandoned by the society. And most often, these kids are from the marginalized minority community.
Each individual of that little gathering had understood and was well motivated by the fact that the backward, especially the marginalized community is the most neglected community in the Nepalese society and something needed to be done. A small help would be a lot for them. Therefore, each individual decided to put apart some of their money that they would spend for a couple of breakfast. Everyone was so much motivated that they would work a couple of hours more to make a little money for the welfare of the backward community in Nepal. As a result of this motivation, NASO Community was born. Welcome to NASO Community! |
